My Baby’s Skin Rash Taught Me to Read Labels, Here’s What I Use Now

When my first was a newborn, I had high hopes of doing everything “right.” I had a popular, well-known baby bath wash that seemed like what every mom I knew had used. It smelled amazing, the branding was adorable, and I didn’t think twice about it.

Then after one of his first baths, his skin broke out in a little rash.

I want to be clear! This wasn’t a medical emergency, and I’m not here to scare anyone. But it was enough to stop me in my tracks and make me actually look at what was in that bottle. The culprit? I am pretty sure it was the fragrance. His newborn skin was just too sensitive for it, and once I switched to a fragrance-free wash, the rash cleared up and never came back.

That moment changed how I shop for my kids’ skincare products completely. And living in northern Alberta where the winters are brutally dry, keeping little ones’ skin healthy and moisturized is genuinely something I think about all year long.

Here’s what I’ve learned and what we actually use.

Newborn Skin Is More Sensitive Than You Think

Newborn skin is thinner, more permeable, and much more reactive than adult skin. What seems totally harmless to us can easily irritate a baby. And fragrance is one of the most common culprits. This includes both synthetic fragrance and sometimes even natural essential oils, which can still be irritating for very new skin.

I’m not saying every baby will react the way mine did. Plenty of babies do just fine. But if your baby has any kind of skin reaction after a bath or lotion application, fragrance is worth looking at.

I didn’t land on our current routine overnight, it took some trial and error, and a little bit of frustration along the way.

Earth Mama was the next brand we tried, and I still love and recommend it. Their Simply Non-Scents wash is castile soap based, made with organic herbs and oils, and free from synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. It’s also Leaping Bunny certified which matters to me. Gentle enough for newborns and it actually lathers nicely which not all natural washes do.

Attitude is what I’ve settled on now with my second and honestly it might be my favourite. I love that it’s actually a Canadian brand! It was developed by a dad who wanted cleaner products for his family. Their baby line is EWG Verified, dermatologically tested, vegan, and cruelty-free. We use their 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash.

The Honest Company is another one we rotate through regularly. Their shampoo and body wash is a staple for us, gentle, effective, and easy to find. I like that it’s a brand most people have heard of if you’re just starting to make the switch away from conventional baby products, because it’s not intimidating or hard to find.

Lotion Is Non-Negotiable Up Here

If you don’t live somewhere with a real winter, you might not fully understand how dry the air gets here in northern Alberta. We’re talking cracked skin, staticky everything, and kids who would scratch themselves raw if you let them. Moisturizing after bath time isn’t optional in our house! It’s part of the routine.

We’ve been using Attitude and The Honest Company lotions and both have been great. The Attitude baby lotion absorbs really well without feeling greasy, which is important when you’re trying to get a squirmy toddler lotioned up before bed. For extra dry patches (which definitely happen in winter) I’ll sometimes use a small amount of a plain fragrance-free balm or ointment on really dry areas after the lotion. Knees, elbows, anywhere that gets cracked.

What I Look For on Labels Now

Since my son’s newborn rash I’ve become a pretty consistent label reader. Here’s what I personally avoid for my kids, especially since their skin is sensitive:

– Fragrance / parfum: this single word on an ingredient list can represent hundreds of undisclosed chemicals

– Parabens: preservatives I’d rather skip

– Sulfates (SLS/SLES): can be drying and irritating, especially for sensitive skin

– Phthalates: often hidden in “fragrance,” another reason to avoid it

– Dyes: unnecessary and another common irritant

And what I look for:

– Fragrance-free (not just “unscented” — these aren’t the same thing)

– EWG Verified when possible

– Short, recognizable ingredient lists

– Dermatologically tested for sensitive skin
